In honour of Earth Day this weekend, we have a number of home improvement ideas for an energy-efficient home. Check out our 6 home improvement tips to GO GREEN.
1. Lighting
We all know we should turn the lights off when we leave a room. One step up – replace your lighting with LED lights for less energy consumption. Dimmer switches also help save energy by reducing the flow of electricity to the bulb.
2. Windows
If you have drafty windows, add weather-stripping around the frame to reduce air leaks. Even better, when it’s time for replacement, install Energy Star windows to keep heat in during the winter and out during the summer.
3. Unplug
You might have electronics and smaller appliances around the house like a toaster, air fryer, computer monitor, phone charger, lamp or hair dryer that are always plugged in. Unplug these when not in use!
4. Efficient Showerheads
Install low-flow showerheads and low-flow, dual-flush toilets to conserve water usage in your home. These are relatively low cost improvements that will save you money in the long run.
5. Better Insulation
The quality of insulation in your home matters. Make sure the building envelope of your home is tightly sealed to reduce air leakage and drafts, and to minimize heat escape.
6. Programmable Thermostat
Install a programmable thermostat. This will also save you money by turning down your heating and cooling automatically at night, or during times when no one is home.
